‘L’ Stands for ‘Loaded With Power’

One of the areas that may help you to create more power in your swing, is just above half way into your backswing. As you can see from the pictures below the club shaft and my left forearm are forming an L shape. This is sometimes known as the set position although it is important to point out that this is not a static position – it happens during the continuous movement of the backswing. The cocking of the wrists to form this ‘L shape’ is creating leverage that can easily be turned into clubhead speed (distance). It should also be noted that this is best achieved when the arms and hands are still relaxed. The second picture illustrates that this wrist hinge is not done straight up but in line with the ball (sometimes referred to as on plane).

If your swing is lacking a little power check this position in your swing.

Many thanks Paul. Appointments with Paul can be booked via Powerscourt Golf Club Reception: Tel (01) 204 6033 or the Golf Shop Tel (01) 204 6031. Read more about lessons from Paul Thompson by visiting the Powerscourt Golf Club Website.
