Fantastic Powerscourt Pro-Am Sponsored by Etihad

The Sun! Yes, the sun coupled with calm warm conditions greeted all competitors for the annual Powerscourt Pro-Am in association with Etihad Airways last Sunday August 26th. There were 54 teams that played in the event staged on both our East & West courses. The format was a rumble, best two scores to count on each hole, with teams made up of 1 Professional and 3 amateurs. The 54 teams were facilitated by a shotgun start on both courses at 2pm.

All players were invited for a BBQ lunch from 12 noon with a lovely selection of meats and salads. Amateurs registered in the Clubhouse with Noeleen Corrigan or Dianna Dunne depending on which course they played and Professionals registered with Wesley Pappin and his colleagues from the PGA in the scoring truck.

Goodie Bags were provided for all players piled high with refreshments, golf accessories and souvenirs. There was an excellent atmosphere ahead of the golf and the day built up nicely.

As the Pro Am began the weather remained favourable and while play was slow all enjoyed themselves immensely. Teams from the Mens and Ladies club at Powerscourt as well as from the sponsors Etihad Airways were supported by members and clients of Powerscourt. Professionals played their own ball and marked an individual card with the winning score recorded by Malahide club pro John Murray, a four-under-par 68 on the West Course to land the Etihad PGA Pro-Am. He was one clear of Limerick’s Cian McNamara in the warm-up for the Southern PGA Championship which takes place at the same venue.

There were in effect two pro-ams with the players spread over the East and West courses but there was only one overall winner. Best on the East track were Peter Jones (Coollattin) and David Mortimer (Galway), both of whom posted two-under-par 70 to be joint third overall. There was a tie on 91 points in the team event with Philip Farrell’s team of Teresa Thompson, Shay Keenan and Jim Melody beating John Murray’s fourball from The Powerscourt Arms on a countback for top place.

Competitors enjoyed a Buffet Dinner after play followed by a presentation in the Oak Room. Prizes were:

Overall Winners won beautiful Tipperary Crystal vases with hampers, wine and golf clubs making up the additional rewards for good golf on the day.

Golf Manager Bernard Gibbons was MC for the night and representatives from The PGA, Etihad (Pro Am sponsors) and Volkswagen (PGA Championship sponsors) said a few words, presented prizes and thanked all for making the day a great success.

Next years Pro-Am will take place on Sunday August 25th. Teams of 3 are €450 and you will be paired with a PGA Professional, if you would like to participate and enter a team please contact us below at:
