Review of Open Week 2013 at Powerscourt Golf Club

Our open week took place this year on Monday the 22nd of July and ended on Saturday the 27th. This year open week was held on our East course and the conditions as usual were immaculat. So often this year we have had tremendous feedback about the course. It is a credit to all the green keepers. They constantly have both our East and West courses in great shape. The attention to detail the courses receive is why there are the best maintained in the country.

A special thanks to all involved in the food and beverage that had on daily specials and the feedback from the food was again terrific. The rooms were always clean and fresh looking and the staff worked tirelessly to ensure everybody enjoyed their day. Now down to the business.

The week started as it meant to go on with low scores and great golf played. To kick things off the seniors showed us all why we don’t need to drive the ball 300 yards.

Michael Heary got the ball rolling winning the Senior Singles with 42 points, but he didn’t have it all is own way – Joe Gaynor and Gerry Ginty were second and third respectively with a great round of 41 points.  A great start to the week with a great turnout.

Tuesday the 23rd saw the ladies do battle. This was kindly sponsored by Mercury Engineering. The format was an invitational Stableford 2 ball rumble. The scores really reflected how well everybody was playing on this particular day with only a count back separating 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Unfortunately not everybody can claim that coveted first prize but Pauline Ann Murray and Andrea Fitzgerald did just enough to hang on with an impressive 50pts after a count back.

There was also best front 9 prize won by Christine McCluskey and Jenifer Sowman with 26pts. Helen Scully and Suzanne Sherry won the back 9 prize with 27pts!

Wednesday the 24th was the Men’s Fourball Stableford.

For once the Irish summer disappointed and we had clear skies and a funny yellow object in the sky that radiated heat! Nothing was hotter than the golf though on this occasion with Mark McKevitt and Stephen Masterson winning on a count back with 47 points.

Thursday the 25th was the Ladies Fourball Stableford and this time there was an outright winner of Keri Cullen and Anne Barry with 43 points. Our visitors gave great feedback on the course and it was good to see everybody enjoying the beautiful surrounds.

Friday was the 18 hole mixed team of four rumble and went right down to the wire with Kieron Nolan, Padraig McElwain, Mark Burke and Gerry White winning on a count back with 99 pts.

The last day of open week took place on Saturday the 27th. What a way to finish with a men and ladies single Stableford! We weren’t one bit surprised when we saw the results as all week; it seemed that golfers brought their A game. The winner of the Mens Singles was Padraig O Sullivan with an incredible score of 46 points off a handicap of 10. Enjoy single figures. You earned it!

The ladies were a close encounter as well with Sarah McCooey carding an impressive 39 points on a count back.

It was a fitting way to end open week and a special thanks to Frank Keane Volkswagen for his continued support.

We keep learning from each open week that takes place and no doubt next year will be equally successful. So with that, Powerscourt Golf club wish to thank you all again for your continued support throughout the year.

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.”- Bobby Jones

Thanks to Stephen Goff, Sales & Group Co-ordinator at Powerscourt Golf Club for this great review of Open Week
