Release through the shot for power

Release through the shot for power

This week Advanced PGA Professional at Powerscourt Paul Thompson provides coaching on how to ‘Release through the shot for Power’.

  • A lot of people do not get through or release their body and club through the shot. Some of this is caused by trying to keep their head down or being too stiff and rigid in their muscles. Whatever the reason it stops the natural flow of energy getting to the ball and reduces the pressure applied at impact – big causes of power loss in the shot.

  • Try this drill to simulate the feeling of a full release. If you’re a right-handed golfer, grip the club very lightly with your right hand and place your left hand on your chest. Swing the club freely, letting the weight of the club swing itself and in the follow-through feel the sensation of your right side of your body turning through as far as it will go.

  • Then try and hit normal shots trying to create the same sensation in your follow through. This should be done at a slow to easy pace. Swing to start with to help you co-ordinate your torso with your arms and passive hand release.
