Putting Pace

Putting Pace

Great golfers don’t just build good techniques through hard work and practise they also develop skills as well. One of the skills that these type of golfers have been shown to be have a good control of is the ability to control the speed of the club-head in the short game. In putting the speed or pace of the putter head is going to be largely responsible for the distance control.

Here is a simple drill you can take to the putting green to help improve pace control.

You need 3 markers and of course a ball and a putter.

Place 3 markers in a line with a gap of about 6 – 8 feet apart to start with. You can vary this distance to suit your needs as you progress.

Putt from one of the end markers and try to hit the putt just past the marker in the middle. If you do not hit it past the middle marker or if you hit the ball past the end marker at any point in this exercise you have to start again. Replace the middle marker next to the ball you have you have just putted (remember it must go past the middle marker and not go past the end marker) so now the middle marker will move closer to the end marker. Go back to the starting marker again and try and hit your putt past the middle marker again without going past the end marker. If you have good pace control in your putting you should be able to repeat this process a number of times whilst still hitting your ball in between both middle and end markers. You can always play this with other people and make a competition out of it seeing who can get most putts between the markers before the gap gets too small.
