Open Week 2012 at Powerscourt Golf Club

Our first fully Open Week started on Monday 23rd of July and ended on Sunday 29th. For the first time visitors (not having to be members’ guests) could play. The weather was mixed during the week but this did not deter the participants  from turning out in great numbers to play the courses. The week was very well supported and enjoyed by all. There were almost 1,100 who played in total.

The standard and quality of both our courses were commented on by all players despite the challenging conditions.

The Men’s Singles competition, sponsored by Carr Communications, commenced the week on Monday in glorious sunshine and saw member Ronnie Ellis win.

Tuesday saw rain for the Ladies. The format was a scramble. The day was sponsored by Kartel /Powerscourt Golf Shop. The winning team included Sinead Cassidy, Lady Captain Bernie Browne and her guest Aideen Kenny.

Wednesday was a fine day and the men’s Fourball competition, sponsored by TGI Fridays was won by brothers and members Donal and David Hurley. The presentation for this took place on the Wednesday evening as it is traditional mens invitation day and we continued with this theme.

The Thursday Ladies Fourball competition was sponsored by The Garden Pavilion at Powerscourt , attracted another large entry and was won by Pam O’Toole and her guest Frances Mahon (Newlands). The prizes were excellent and were received well.

On Friday we had a Mixed Foursomes competition –won by Vice Captain John and Rhona Shiel. This was followed by a Nine & Dine. Prize-giving for four of the first five days was held on the Friday Night.

The Member’s bar was the venue for the Prizegiving. Over ninety attended for dinner also. There was a great atmosphere and it was wonderful to see so many collect their prizes. The food and service was good and praised by committees. General Manager Bernard Gibbons & Golf Shop Manager Dianna Dunne attended the evening in the company of Captains and Officers.

The Saturday men’s singles competition, sponsored by John Shiel, was won by Pat Curran- with a fantastic score of 43 points. The Ladies Singles competition, sponsored by the Ladies Club, was won by Annette Deignan.

The Sunday Mixed Team of Four Scramble saw first prize going to Colin Fitzpatrick (The Island), Andy Cullen (The Island), Mark Fitzpatrick (Clonmel) and Barry Mulligan (Clonmel).

We are very grateful to sponsors Carr Communications, Kartel/Powerscourt Golf Shop, TGI Friday, The Garden Pavilion Powerscourt & John Shiel Solicitors. The prizes were very much appreciated by all who won them. Without the very generous sponsorship we would be unable to run such an event.
